Why is Flight Level 180 so Special? Why can it be Unusable at Times?
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.3 года назад
Flight Level 180, or FL180, in the United States is known as the transition altitude. Depending on the local altimeter setting, FL180 can be unusable for ATC separation. Because of this, assigning FL180 always makes air traffic controllers double check the altimeter setting to ensure it's usable.

    at 3:17 assuming you were approved to enter the pattern, can you cross the runway overhead at say 500 feet above pattern altitude and do a 200+ degree turn and enter the downwind at 45 that way (vs going the designated flight path you have in red? Hope this makes sense

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC 27 дней назад

      Absolutely not. That would be in direct violation of the controller’s instructions. Also, there’s really no need to conduct that lengthy turn unless you’re high. But if you are entering high, it would be far easier to request an extended downwind.

    Note that at 15:48 and onward, the initial contact request doesn't actually include a request for taxi (even though that seems to have been the plan to do so, at least according to the briefing right beforehand), not sure if something got cut out there or not... I made that mistake in my CAT-6 of only requesting Flight Following and then not following it up with a second full request for taxi, so was left sitting in parking for a while :-)

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC Месяц назад

      The controller inferred the pilot was ready to taxi and confirmed with the pilot after the pilot’s readback. The controller likely assumed he was ready to taxi since he included his location on the airfield in the flight following request. But you’re right, there wasn’t an *official* request to taxi. However, the controller was able to read between the lines of the request.

    I remember during one of my long cross country trips as part of my private pilot certificate requirements, NY Approach advised me to coordinate any transitions through Class D airspaces in my path. I had to switch frequencies and talk to the Class D controller while transitioning through their airspace, then returned back to NY Approach for flight following.

    I'm not here to join in on the critique of airspeeds on approach, etc, but can we presume that for the CAT ratings, the evaluations are based on radio comms with ATC and not flying a perfect pattern, approach, etc? Naturally, you want to do it all correctly, but just curious about the specific criteria for CAT. IE it's not a check ride ;-).

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC 2 месяца назад

      PilotEdge’s mission isn’t to teach you how to fly your airplane. Our goal is to teach pilots how to talk on the radios and interact with ATC. The CAT ratings teach and test for those two objectives while allowing the practical component of airspace navigation into the mix.

I've been seeing a lot of videos lately of controllers berating pilots for not flying procedures for noise abatement or some similar unpublished VFR procedures. • @pilotedgeATC

      Not quite. Reference AC 90-66C. Departure leg is used when departing the pattern/area. The upwind is used for other instances, or when operating on the side opposite of the downwind leg. Regardless, it’s important to know that in a towered environment, ATC will very likely use these terms interchangeably so you need to expect that and react accordingly, even if ATC may be technically incorrect in their terminology.

    One thing I'm curious about. You talk about how they may or may not pass you off to your destination airport. And I think in the video the "radar service terminated" in fact means they did not and essentially they canceled flight following? Trying to understand the why here. You asked for flight following, so under what conditions do they just decide to end it? Feels arbitrary.

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC 9 месяцев назад

      Not arbitrary at all. The radar controller will likely hand you off to full-radar towers, but will terminate your radar service at non-radar or limited-radar towers. Simply depends on the equipment the tower has. As a pilot, you need to be prepared for each scenario (one where you’re calling the tower out of the blue, and the other where you’re calling the tower with them having knowledge of you) and react accordingly.

Am I crazy or did you call El Monte ground while over in San Bernadino? :D Glad to know I'm not the only one that makes mistakes like that! Also a couple questions about the piloting, but I know that isn't the point of these videos. 1. Report a 3 mile base -- any tips on judging distances like that in the air? 2. Not a critique, just my confusion, but it looked like you reported 3 mile base while you were actually on crosswind? Or did I misunderstand the pattern? I find entering the patterns very confusing spacially.

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC 9 месяцев назад

      North is north. If ATC cares, they’ll specify. Yes, the pilot misspoke. Judging distances is a skill gained over time, but the sim doesn’t make it easy. Just do your best, supplement with GPS, or have an idea of some landmarks around the airport. The 3 mile base call was made on the base leg. Go back and review your legs of the traffic pattern in the CAT3.

    I'm curious why you said that you expected right downwind rather than something else.

    • @pilotedgeATC

      Because the pilot was approaching from that side of the airport

    No way I could ever fly this. Way too much stress for me! I'm shocked they don't have a pretty high accident record.

      It’s only stressful if you’re unprepared! Prepare with SimVenture beforehand and it becomes easy.

    TPA one thousand two hundred.. and THREE. Can anyone actually fly a pattern that precisely? I sure as hell can't in the sim. The airplane is way too sensitive. Wonder if it is different in real life?

      No. Check ride for PPL is +-100’… holding 3’ is impossible. You should strive for +-50’ though.

    As an aircraft firefighter worked around airfields for 40 years and found this amazing! The spotters remotely located make perfect sense and explains the extra ATC traffic Completely understand if on a short final but very curious about how you handle inflight emergencies? Divert to an alternate airfield so it doesn't interrupt flow?

    • @pilotedgeATC
      @pilotedgeATC 10 месяцев назад

      Emergencies are handled the same way they are every day across the country. The aircraft in distress becomes the number one priority and anything they need, they get. If that means closing down OSH airport and letting them land while other aircraft are forced to divert, then that’s what will happen.

    VORs are amazingly confusing (remember: your IQ drops 30 points the moment you sit down in the left seat) so hats off to the pilots who had to learn VOR nav without the benefit of GPS looking over their shoulder. Double hats off to the ADF pilots. Nice tutorial!

      Negative. The wires are used as a perspective reference point.

    These are great tutorials - I'm currently working my way through the CAT ratings. I know it's still simulation but I got nervous the first time calling! It's tough sometimes to understand what they are saying, even when I'm listening to our local Tower, sometimes I'm like "I didn't understand a word that controller said" -At the end, right before you are given taxi clearance after clearing the runway, does the controller say 'remain in the streaks?' I couldn't quite make out what you guys are saying there. Thanks!

      Is it “Remain this frequency”? Keep practicing! It gets easy after a while!

      @@pilotedgeATC yes that is it, 'Remain on this freq!' Now I'll never hear it as 'remain in the streaks' thank you

    LOL! How do you fly with flags on the HSI? Crezzyman!

      Easy, it was a glideslope flag. It turned off at the appropriate time, then starting providing glideslope guidance. What flags did you see?

      We’re glad you asked! Our controllers are paid, professional, controllers, who work on a schedule so pilots have our controllers available to them 15 hours per day, 7 days a week. But if quality and service isn’t enough for you, our radio system, procedures and complex refresh rates will surely give you a fantastic training experience. And that’s not all…have a look: www.pilotedge.net/pages/comparison-to-other-networks
